Spirit Of The Game

"Ultimate has traditionally relied upon a spirit of sportsmanship
which places the responsibility for fair play on the individual
player himself. Highly competitive play is encouraged but never at
the expense of mutual respect between players, adherence to
the agreed-upon rules of the game or the basic joy of play."
- WFDF First Rule of Ultimate

The "Spirit of the Game" is a universal philosophy among Ultimate players that fair, but competitive, play should be encouraged. Above all, respect for your opposition is paramount.

So how does the spirit manifest itself on the pitch? Well, for a start, there are no referees. Players make their own foul calls, and oppose these calls in a civilized manner. This even leads, quite often, to players calling fouls against themselves. Also, because the spirit dictates that nobody will intentionally violate the rules, there are no penalties, a concept which bizarrely works on the ultimate pitch. Instead, play resumes in a manner which would most likely have occured had the foul had not been made.

Spirit is what has made the game last so long without the need for referees, unnesserary aggression, or long breaks in play, and it what makes the game so competitive, whilst still being a whole lot of fun.
